If you are already familiar with Mat Pilates, which you will know is a floor based exercise program, you will discover that Reformer Pilates is quite different. Using a ‘reformer machine,’ resistance is added to Pilates exercises via the use of weighted springs and pulleys, which form part of the machine and is generally more dynamic and intense than a mat Pilates workout. One of the best things about the reformer is its versatility. Exercises can be done lying down, sitting, standing, pulling the straps, pushing the foot bar, perched on the foot bar, perched on the shoulder blocks, with additional equipment, upside down, sideways and all kinds of variations. With just one relatively sleek piece of equipment the reformer can train many parts and dynamics of the body. Exercises promote length, strength, flexibility and balance. Also, for many, the pain associated with physical imbalances such as low back pain, cranky hips or pinched shoulders is relieved. Pilates has a focus on the core which can basically be thought of as the ‘powerhouse’ of your body. Your core is the area between your shoulders and your pelvis (without your arms and legs) and encompasses all the muscles within this area. Because of its core focus, Pilates is popular not only in the field of fitness, but also in rehabilitation. It can be used to progress individuals through movements that represent your day-to-day activities. The focus on strengthening the core and improving postural awareness are especially well indicated for the alleviation and prevention of back, neck and joint pain. If you’re looking for faster results, or require a little more support, Reformer Pilates will be preferable for you. There are many reformer exercises for first-time beginners and also exercises that challenge more advanced practitioners. Different weighted springs allow the workout to be tailored specifically to you.
